Beyond the Scales: What a Body Composition (BIA) Test Can Tell You
When you're trying to lose weight or improve your health, it is easy to become focused on one number: your weight.
But your weight only tells us how heavy you are. It doesn't tell us what that weight is made up of.
Are you losing body fat? Are you maintaining muscle? Has your body composition changed even though your weight hasn't? And where are you carrying your body fat?
This is why, at LEPT Nutrition, we often look beyond the number on the scales.
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a quick, non-invasive method of estimating body composition and can provide additional information about body fat, muscle mass, visceral fat and body water.
When used alongside your health history, nutrition, lifestyle and other clinical assessments, BIA can help us build a much better picture of your progress.
What Is Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis?
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, commonly called BIA, estimates body composition by passing a very small electrical current through the body.
Different body tissues conduct this current differently.
Lean tissue contains a relatively high proportion of water and electrolytes and therefore conducts electrical current more readily. Fat tissue contains less water and creates greater resistance, or impedance.
The BIA device combines this information with factors such as your height, weight, age and sex to estimate different components of your body composition.
Depending on the equipment used, this may include:
Body fat percentage
Muscle mass
Visceral fat rating
Total body water
Segmental muscle mass
Estimated basal metabolic rate
Bone mass estimate
Metabolic age or physique rating
These measurements can provide useful information, particularly when they are tracked consistently over time.
However, it is important to understand that most BIA measurements are estimates rather than direct measurements of individual tissues.
Why Your Weight Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
Imagine two women both weigh 75 kg.
One has more skeletal muscle and less body fat.
The other has less muscle and a higher percentage of body fat.
The number on the bathroom scales is identical, but their body composition is very different.
This becomes particularly important during weight loss.
If you lose 5 kg, we don't simply want to know that you are 5 kg lighter.
We want to know:
How much of that weight was body fat?
Did you maintain your muscle?
Are you losing weight at an appropriate rate?
This is why body composition can provide much more useful information than weight alone.
What Can a BIA Test Tell You?
1. Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage estimates how much of your total body weight is made up of fat.
For example, two people who both weigh 70 kg may have very different body fat percentages depending on their muscle mass and body composition.
When someone is trying to lose weight, the goal generally isn't simply to make the number on the scales smaller.
We ideally want to reduce excess body fat while maintaining as much lean muscle as possible.
This distinction becomes increasingly important as we age.
Very low body fat is not necessarily healthier either. Body fat has important physiological roles, including energy storage, insulation and protection of internal organs, and adipose tissue also has endocrine functions.
The goal is therefore not zero body fat—it is an appropriate body composition for the individual.
2. Visceral Fat
Visceral fat is the fat stored deeper within the abdominal cavity around internal organs.
This is different from subcutaneous fat, which sits underneath the skin.
Higher levels of visceral fat are associated with increased cardiometabolic risk, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Visceral fat becomes particularly relevant as we move through midlife.
During the menopause transition, changes in sex hormones can contribute to changes in fat distribution, with a greater tendency for fat to accumulate around the abdominal region.
This means a woman's weight may not change dramatically, yet her body composition and fat distribution may change.
BIA devices do not directly image visceral fat in the way that CT or MRI can. Instead, they provide an estimate or rating that can be useful for monitoring trends over time.
3. Muscle Mass
Muscle mass is one of the measurements I pay particular attention to.
Muscle isn't just about looking toned or being able to lift heavy weights.
Skeletal muscle is important for:
Strength
Mobility
Physical function
Glucose disposal
Insulin sensitivity
Metabolic health
Healthy ageing
Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important from midlife onwards.
It is also one of the reasons I don't recommend focusing solely on rapid weight loss.
If calorie intake is excessively restricted and protein intake and resistance exercise are inadequate, some of the weight you lose may come from lean tissue.
That is not the outcome we want.
The goal is generally to lose excess body fat while doing everything practical to preserve muscle.
4. Body Composition During Menopause
Body composition assessment can be particularly useful for women during perimenopause and menopause.
Many women tell me:
“My weight hasn't changed much, but my body has.”
Or:
“I'm the same weight I was five years ago, but everything sits differently.”
This is a very real experience.
Changes in oestrogen, ageing, activity, sleep, stress and muscle mass can all contribute to changes in body composition and fat distribution.
This is why I encourage women to move away from making body weight their only measure of success.
During menopause, we need to think about protecting:
Muscle
Bone
Cardiovascular health
Metabolic health
Mobility
Strength
Sometimes improving your body composition is a much more meaningful goal than simply trying to achieve the lowest possible number on the scales.
5. Total Body Water
BIA can also estimate total body water.
Water is found throughout the body, including within cells and in the spaces surrounding them.
Hydration is essential for normal physiological function, including temperature regulation, circulation, digestion and cellular processes.
But body water is also one of the reasons BIA results can fluctuate.
Your hydration status can influence electrical conductivity and therefore affect the estimates produced by a BIA device.
Results may also be influenced by recent exercise, food and fluid intake, alcohol, time of day and other factors.
This is why consistency matters when comparing BIA measurements.
Where possible, measurements should be performed under similar conditions each time.
6. Segmental Muscle Mass
Some BIA devices can estimate muscle distribution across different areas of the body, such as the arms, legs and trunk.
This is known as segmental analysis.
It may provide additional information about how lean mass is distributed and can be useful for monitoring changes over time.
However, BIA is not a diagnostic tool for assessing injuries or musculoskeletal disorders.
If a significant imbalance is suspected, this needs to be interpreted alongside appropriate clinical or physical assessment.
7. Estimated Basal Metabolic Rate
Many BIA devices also provide an estimated basal metabolic rate (BMR).
BMR represents the energy your body requires to maintain basic physiological functions at rest.
This includes functions such as:
Breathing
Circulation
Cellular activity
Temperature regulation
Organ function
However, there is an important word here:
Estimated.
A BIA device does not directly measure how many calories your body burns.
It estimates your metabolic rate using equations and information such as your body composition, age, weight, height and sex.

BIA vs ECAL: What's the Difference?
BIA and ECAL provide different information.
BIA estimates your body composition.
ECAL uses indirect calorimetry to measure your resting metabolic rate by analysing oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production while you rest.
Rather than relying solely on an equation to predict your calorie requirements, ECAL provides an objective measurement of your resting energy expenditure.
ECAL can also provide your respiratory quotient (RQ), which gives us information about whether your body is predominantly using carbohydrate or fat as fuel at rest.
When appropriate, combining BIA body composition assessment with ECAL metabolic testing allows us to look at two different pieces of the puzzle:
What is your body made up of?
And how much energy is your body actually using at rest?
This can be particularly useful when developing an individualised weight-management strategy.
8. Bone Mass
Some BIA devices provide an estimated bone mass.
It is important to understand what this number means—and what it doesn't mean.
A BIA bone mass estimate is not a measurement of bone density and cannot diagnose osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Bone mineral density is assessed using appropriate medical investigations such as a DEXA scan.
The BIA result may form part of your overall body composition data, but it should never replace appropriate bone-health screening.
This distinction is particularly important for women during and after menopause, when bone health becomes increasingly important.
9. Metabolic Age
Metabolic age is a feature included on some body composition devices.
It generally compares your estimated metabolic rate or body composition with population averages for different age groups.
It can be interesting and sometimes motivating, but it isn't a medical diagnosis and shouldn't be given too much importance.
Your actual health cannot be summarised by whether a machine tells you that your metabolism is “42” or “62.”
I am much more interested in measurable changes in your muscle mass, body fat, waist circumference, metabolic health, fitness, nutrition and overall wellbeing.
How Accurate Is BIA?
BIA is useful, but it isn't perfect.
Results can be influenced by:
Hydration
Recent food intake
Exercise
Alcohol consumption
Time of day
Bladder contents
Changes in fluid balance
Measurement conditions
This is why a single BIA result should not be treated as an absolute measurement of your health.
Its real value is often in tracking trends.
If we perform assessments under similar conditions and look at what happens over several weeks or months, we can gain useful information about the direction your body composition is moving.
How to Prepare for a BIA Assessment
For the most useful comparison between assessments, consistency is important.
Where practical:
Measure at a similar time of day
Avoid measuring immediately after exercise
Avoid a large meal immediately beforehand
Maintain your normal hydration
Avoid excessive alcohol beforehand
Use the same device for follow-up measurements
The goal is to reduce the number of variables that can affect the result.
Stop Letting the Scales Define Your Progress
If your goal is weight loss, it can be frustrating when the scales don't move as quickly as you expect.
But weight alone doesn't tell us whether your health is improving.
Imagine you lose 2 kg of fat while gaining or preserving muscle.
The scales may barely change, yet your body composition may be moving in exactly the direction we want.
Your waist may decrease.
Your clothes may fit differently.
You may become stronger.
Your blood glucose may improve.
Your energy may improve.
These are meaningful outcomes.
This is particularly important during menopause and healthy ageing, when preserving muscle should be a priority rather than simply becoming lighter.

What is a BIA body composition test?

Is BIA better than weighing yourself?
The two measurements tell you different things. Weight tells you your total body mass, whereas BIA provides estimates of how that weight is distributed between components such as fat and lean tissue. For weight-management monitoring, this additional information can be useful.
Can BIA tell me how much visceral fat I have?
BIA can provide an estimate or rating of visceral fat, but it does not directly measure visceral fat. Medical imaging techniques provide more direct assessment. BIA is most useful for monitoring trends alongside other health measurements.
Can BIA measure my metabolism?

What is the difference between BIA and ECAL?
BIA estimates body composition, including body fat and muscle mass. ECAL measures resting energy expenditure through indirect calorimetry. When used together, they can provide complementary information for an individualised weight-management plan.
Is BIA useful during menopause?
It can be. Menopause can be associated with changes in fat distribution and body composition, making muscle mass, body fat and visceral fat useful measures to consider alongside weight, waist circumference, health markers and lifestyle.
Can BIA diagnose osteoporosis?
No. A BIA bone mass estimate is not the same as bone mineral density and cannot diagnose osteopenia or osteoporosis. Appropriate medical assessment, such as a DEXA scan, is required when bone density needs to be investigated.
How often should I have a BIA test?
This depends on why you are being assessed. Body composition does not need to be measured every day. When monitoring a nutrition or weight-management program, periodic measurements performed under similar conditions are generally more useful than frequent measurements.
Look Beyond Your Weight
The scales are one measurement.
They are not the complete picture.
When we're assessing weight loss, menopause or healthy ageing, I want to know much more than whether the number on the scales has gone down.
Are you losing body fat?
Are you preserving muscle?
What is happening around your abdominal area?
Are you becoming stronger?
How is your metabolic health changing?
And, importantly, is your nutrition strategy supporting the body you want to have not just now, but in 10, 20 or 30 years?
